Skin care – exfoliating

Return of the Flannel.

Smooth, soft skin looks great and feels good. But how exactly do you exfoliate, and what should you use?

Exfoliation means to remove or strip the top layer of something away. When it comes to skin, this is the layer of dead skin cells that haven’t shed properly and are giving you that dry, patchy look.

You know when you need to exfoliate because: a) your foundation looks darker in places where it’s stuck to the dead bits (ugh), b) no amount of moisturizer once it’s sunk in, seems to help, and c) if you’re unlucky, those dry, rough areas itch (again, ugh).

Hints and tips then:

1) Expensive exfoliators or scrubs are fine – they work well and leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.

2) Cheaper exfoliators often contain less granular particles than the more expensive brands, removing less dead skin, but check out own brands such as Boots; with a reputation to withhold, often these products do as good a job as the expensive scrubs.

3) My top tip? THE FLANNEL. Buy a nice, gentle facial soap that you can lather on in the shower (Clinique is good and comes in varieties suited to different skins – it lasts for ages too). Buy a stack of cheap flannels – Shaws the Draper were doing them for 50p each. Take a clean flannel into the shower with you, and once your face is covered in your chosen cleanser, gently scrub it with the flannel.

Trust me, the flannel is making a come-back. Your skin will never feel smoother.
